Birthstone Jewellery: A Guide to Meaningful Gifts

Two engagement rings set with the couple's birthstones - Christine Sadler Unforgettable Jewellery

Birthstones are a beautiful way to personalise a piece of jewellery. Any of our designs can be customised to add a birthstone or you can commission a piece of unforgettable jewellery with several birthstones reepresenting the people you love.

January Birthstone: Garnet

Meaning: Constancy, Loyalty, and Protection.

The birthstone for January is garnet. Historically known as a "traveller’s stone," garnet was believed to light up the night and protect the wearer from harm. It is the perfect gift to symbolise an unbreakable bond and a safe journey through life.

It can come in a reddish brown colour, an orange, pink, or even a vibrant green colour. For a very special birthday gift, one of our customers commissioned a ring and pendant from the Fairypools collection of jewellery set with garnet and diamonds in platinum.

February: Amethyst

Meaning: Peace, Serenity, and Strength.

The birthstone for February is Amethyst. Amethyst is prized for its calming energy. It was once thought to keep the wearer clear-headed and courageous, making it a thoughtful gift for someone who provides a sense of "calm in the storm."

Amethyst is a purple gemstone that can have pink or blue flashes. It comes in all shades from very pale to deep and intense. This is a platinum ring from the Tartan ring collection set with Amethysts and Aquamarines. The Tartan collection can be customised to make a colour combination that you love that represents your family.

April: Diamond

Meaning: Eternal Love, Purity, and Innocence.

The birthstone for April is diamond. As the hardest natural substance on earth, the diamond represents a love that is invincible. It is the ultimate symbol of a commitment that cannot be broken.

A diamond band is a great choice for an April birthday gift. A slim band you can stack next to other rings can be a very versatile gift that you can wear everyday. Choose all diamond or customise our designs with gemstones to represent family members or anniversaries.

May: Emerald

Meaning: Rebirth, Wisdom, and Growth.

The birthstone for May is emerald. The lush green of the emerald has long been associated with the arrival of spring and the heart's renewal. It is believed to grant the wearer foresight and a peaceful mind.

Emeralds are always green but they come in lots of different shades and tones. Emeralds are fragile and need extra care when worn but they are ideal as earrings and pendants where they are less likely to take a knock or be damaged.

Pearls can come in lots of different colours shapes and sizes. We have a beautiful selection of pearl jewellery on our website, many pieces that are unique and which make special birthday gifts.

Meaning: Truth, Nobility, and Sincerity.

The birthstone for September is sapphire.  Long associated with royalty, the sapphire represents a soul that is honest and trustworthy. It is a stone of "heavenly" protection and mental clarity.

Sapphires can come in almost every colour imaginable, except for red as a red sapphire is a Ruby. They are most well known for being blue but are equally beautiful in other colours. In our Hundreds and Thousands ring design, we set different coloured gemstones for a bright, celebratory feel. You can commission these designs with gemstone colour combinations of your choice.

October: Pink Tourmaline (or Opal)

Meaning: Compassion, Emotional Healing, and Self-Love.

The birthstone for October is tourmaline. Known as the "stone of the heart," Pink Tourmaline is celebrated for its ability to encourage a sense of peace and joy. While Opal represents the rainbow, Pink Tourmaline represents a gentle, enduring warmth. It is often gifted as a symbol of deep empathy or to mark a period of personal growth and resilience.

Tourmaline comes in the most stunning shades of red, green, pink and blue. This stunning fuchsia pink tourmaline and diamond ring in yellow gold is a gorgeous gift for a special birthday.

November: Topaz (or Citrine)

Meaning: Affection, Strength, and Clarity.

The birthstone for November is topaz. Historically, Topaz was celebrated in its golden, sun-kissed hues, believed by ancients to capture the glow of the sun. However, in modern jewellery, the vibrant blue shades have become the most loved. These cool, clear blues—ranging from soft Sky Blue to deep London Blue—symbolise a calm and focused mind.

This stunning blue topaz and diamond necklace is one of a kind from the Fairypools collection.

Set with a large oval cut London Blue Topaz and a crescent of diamonds at the bottom, this is a stunning statement necklace for a very special November birthday gift.

December: Tanzanite

Meaning: Intuition, Transformation, and Rare Beauty.

The birthstone for December is tanzanite. Discovered as recently as 1967 at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzanite is found in only one tiny area of the world. Because of its rarity, it has become a symbol of unique, "once-in-a-generation" love. It is believed to help the wearer integrate the heart with the mind, making it a stone of deep wisdom and positive transformation.

This is a one of a kind diamond and tanzanite ring that is in our engagment ring collection.
