If you love colour and want a really strong gemstone, nothing is better than a coloured diamond. Coloured diamonds have intense sparkle and are the hardest gemstone, making them much more durable than emerald or even ruby and sapphire. This makes them ideal as a really special and unique engagement ring or right hand ring that you want to wear every day.
The beauty of coloured diamonds is that the intense sparkle changes how the colour appears in different lighting. You may already know that a very well cut white diamond can appear darker in bright sunlight. This is because the intense sparkle from the stone causes your pupil to contract and it makes the colour of the stone appear darker. On a cloudy day or in shade, when there is less direct sunlight, the diamond will appear much whiter with less sparkle because there is less light being sent back to your eye.
This effect with coloured diamonds means that the shade of the stone becomes deeper and more intense in direct sunlight and softer and lighter in shade. It is a beautiful characteristic of coloured diamonds.
Here's a video of a pink lab diamond in direct light. The colour is deep and the sparkle is intense.
Here are some pictures of the same coloured lab diamond in diffused light. The deep intense peachy pink becomes a soft baby pink.
This modern engagement ring design has white diamonds in the band and a secret halo of diamonds below the solitaire.
We also have a pink lab diamond in our Fire collection. The Fire collection of jewellery is inspired by things that spark joy. This ring has tiny flames forming the organic shape of the band. Each flame is set with a round brilliant cut gemstone. The setting that holds the centre stone is made of platinum claws in the shape of flickering flames.
This unique platinum engagement ring design is extremely special as it expresses that the spark that brought you together will last forever.
Coloured diamonds can also come in blue. This is a mined diamond that has been used in our unique Fairypools ring design.
The Fairy Pools are a series of rock pools fed by a stream of crystal clear water that runs from the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It's a really magical place and this design captures the unique beauty of the location.
This natural diamond has been mined and then it has had its colour enhanced after it was brought to the surface. Natural blue diamonds that are not treated have been exposed to radiation underground. It is possible to replicate these conditions after a gemstone is mined to enhance the colour of a diamond. Diamonds that have colour enhancements are around ten times more affordable than diamonds that are not treated after being mined.
This modern engagement ring design has a very strong Scottish connection to a truely magical location. The real challenge with this design was to capture something as vast and wild as the landscape of the Fairy Pools in a tiny wearable piece of jewellery that you can take with you where ever you go. People who have a strong connection to the Fairy Pools and have visited there say that this design really does capture the sparkling cascade of water and the deep magical pools.
Lab diamonds can also come in blue. This is a ring commission that we made for a customer using her natural white cushion cut diamond and setting in in platinum in a unique Moi et Toi ring design with a round brilliant cut lab diamond.
The commission was to create an engagement ring that symbolised the couple who see themselves as opposites that complement each other. Combining natural and lab diamonds together is a popular choice, especially if you are remodelling a piece of jewellery and want to choose the modern option of lab grown diamonds to own something where no mining has been involved.
Again, you can see in this video that the shade of the diamond differs in direct light to diffused light.
Green is another colour that diamonds can come in and they can vary from deep forest greens to this beautiful bluey green in one of our Fairy Pools designs. This ring has sold and is completely unique. We would be able to source a different green diamond if you wanted to commission this design but it would not be identical to this one.
Diamonds can also be yellow. This is a stunning yellow diamond ring commission we made many years ago. It is a natural fancy yellow diamond set in a yellow gold rubbed over setting surrounded by white diamonds in platinum.
Diamonds can also be black.
Black diamonds are quite different to other coloured diamonds. If they don't have a lot of inclusions, they appear solid in colour, almost like onyx, and there is only sparkle off of the surface facets rather than light refected back as all of the light is absorbed into the stone. A black diamond is a great choice if you love onyx and want a hard wearing gemstone ring that you can wear every day.
Diamonds can also come in orange, purple and red.
The rarest and most expensive diamonds are red in colour. The "Argyle Phoenix" red diamond, which weighs 1.56ct, sold in 2024 for $4.2 million, setting records for the highest price per carat ever paid for a diamond.
We have a small selection of rare coloured diamond rings in both natural and lab diamond at our studio in Ayr that you can view in person and you can customise any of our designs by adding a coloured diamond or commission your own unique diamond ring design. We can source loose diamonds to show you in person or send you videos of diamonds and post the loose stone to you to view before it is set, should you be unable to visit our studio in person.
Get in touch with any questions you have and we will be happy to chat over all the options. Quotations are free.
