Afternoon Tea by Christine Sadler
The Battenberg ring is part of the Afternoon Tea collection. First made with pink and yellow sapphires and later with other combinations of precious gemstones, this is the first design made in platinum with diamonds.
The ring measures 6mm wide and has a raised section where four princess cut diamonds are set. The style of setting is a combination of bar setting and channel setting. The setting is done under microscope to get the precision needed to ensure the corners of the stones are protected but there is no metal visible below them when viewed top down.
The four princess cut diamonds measure 2.9mm by 2.9mm each giving the ring a total carat weight of 0.57ct. This precise length to width ratio is essential for this design to work and diamonds with this level of perfection in cutting are much more valuable. The colour of these diamonds is G and the clarity is VS.
The diamonds in this contemporary ring design give the spread of a much larger diamond of around 1.25ct without having to be too deep. This means that the stones sit closer to the finger making them less likely to catch. The sparkle from the four individual diamonds creates a beautiful effect.
The platinum ring has been matt finished and the top section where the diamonds are is highly polished, reflecting the sparkle. The matt finish really highlights the fire from the diamonds.
